We are now in the fullness of fall. Don’t be fooled by the idea that fall begins on the equinox, or that the trees aren’t fully golden. The season began to turn on the first of August with Lughnasad, and is now coming into its peak with Mabon, the festival of the Autumnal Equinox, on September 23rd. We’ve got three months to enjoy this season – August, September and October. Can you feel the energies of Yin and Yang, moving one into the other, turning the wheel of the year? At the mid-point of autumn, the yang energy of summer is giving over to the yin energy of the coming winter, and the two are balanced. This is the time, whether we are conscious of it or not, where we assess what’s still viable and worth keeping, and what’s run its course and is finished. We glean and we release, preparing for the still-point that’s coming at the bottom of the year, marked by Halloween/Day of the Dead. Some people look forward to “spring cleaning,” but I like to take advantage of the energies of this season to do my letting-go of “stuff.” My daughter Azalea has been reading the best-selling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and spent almost the entirety of last week going through every scrap she owns and divesting herself of everything that doesn’t “spark joy” (which was a lot of stuff). It’s been very inspiring, and I’ve been following suit to the best of my ability (without my husband’s full-fledged endorsement).
