We have recently entered the Summer/Fire season by crossing the Cross-Quarter threshold of Beltane, at the 1st of May.
We’ve now moved into the three month period of the Fire/Summer element–May, June and July. In the middle of this phase will be the Summer Solstice–only six weeks away. That’s the peak of the year, on the 21st of June.
Because we are in this Fire Element season, it’s a great time to revisit an important exercise that Donna Eden calls the Triple Warmer Smoothie. Triple Warmer is the governor of our fight, flight and freeze system and is a Fire Element meridian.
This is a perfect time to tap in to that part of ourselves.
(In many places in the world, people are fully living in a fight, flight or freeze kind of situation, so I think this is an absolutely appropriate exercise for these times.)
Let’s do the Triple Warmer Smoothie. It could not be simpler. (You can do this sitting in a chair or standing.)
- Inhale, exhale—feel into yourself.
- Rub hands. Shake them off.
- Put your fingertips at the temples. (This is where the triple warmer meridian ends, and we’re going to go backwards on it.)
- Take a breath in while you push up, and then exhale fully through the mouth as you sweep your hands down behind your ears and down the side of your neck.
- Then hang on your shoulders for a moment with another breath in, and then exhale–dragging your hands down to your chest.
- Now shake that energy off—and repeat that part again.
- Fingertips at the temples. Inhale—push up. Exhale—come down behind the ears.
- Hang on the shoulders for another breath in, then exhale dragging forward, and shake that stress off.
- Now sweep the energy down the arm from the top of the shoulder down the back of the upper arm, down the forearm and off the ring finger. Do both sides.
That’s the triple warmer smoothie—great to use when things get heated or you get stressed or overwhelmed because of summer and all of the Yang energy–and everything that’s going on in the world. A quick little Triple Warmer Smoothie with the extra added benefit of using your breath will make a big difference.
